Sourdough Chocolate Cookies

This was sent to us by one of our followers, Syringa from Spudland.

When I saw your website today, I thought you might be interested in trying my sourdough recipe.  I found a cookie recipe in an old photo album that was written by my grandmother circa 1940.  I modified it to use my sourdough starter and am sending it along to you.  I use a Salt Lake sourdough that is about half whole wheat.  The thicker your starter is, the more “domed” the cookies will be.  Enjoy.

Sourdough Chocolate Cookies

1/2 cup shortening

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1/2 cup sourdough starter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup chopped walnuts

Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.  Add eggs and beat well.  Stir in sourdough starter and vanilla.  Combine flour, cocoa, soda, and salt; stir in.  Add walnuts.  Roll dough into balls about 1 1/4″ in diameter.  Place on lightly greased baking sheets.

Bake at 350 degrees F. for 10 to 12 minutes or until set.  Makes 4 dozen.
